Steps to transfer to VIU

If you have at least 24 university-level credits, we will consider you for admission as a transfer student. If you have less than 24 credits, you will still need to qualify for admission based on your secondary school transcript, or as a mature student. No matter how many credits you already have, you’ll follow these steps.

Before you start the process, be aware that VIU has a Residency Requirement for VIU credentials. This means to earn a credential at VIU, you must complete at least fifty percent of your credits at VIU. Connect with an advisor if you have questions about how this will impact you.

Step one: apply to VIU

Apply to the appropriate program.

Step two: submit your transcripts

You must submit official secondary and post-secondary transcripts from all institutions you have attended. Transcripts should be sent to Registration Services directly from the institutions that you have studied at.

Step three: accept your offer of admission

You must be admitted as a student before we assess transfer credit. We do our best to process credit in a timely manner, but it may take some time.

Step four: prepare for class registration

If you are transferring from a BC post-secondary school, you can check your courses in the BC Transfer Guide for an indication of what transfer credit you can expect. This will help to ensure you’ve got the prerequisites you need for your upcoming courses at VIU.

The BC Transfer Guide has a growing list of out of province and international equivalencies.

If you’re transferring from outside of BC and we don’t have a transfer equivalency in place with the school you’re transferring from, you may need to send us course outlines. For more on how this process works, see transfer credit process.

Step five: wait for your transfer credits

While you wait for your transfer credits, you can meet with an Advisor for help with class registration. It’s a good idea to have all of your documents with you.

What if you have a degree or diploma?

If you’ve completed a program at another institution, you may qualify for a block transfer.
